RPGs in Europe

Written in 2020

In Japan, the console RPG craze started with Dragon Quest in 1986 and in the US in 1987. The genre, already popular on home computers, was now available on the new game consoles with convenient joypad controls and on the home television.

But in Europe, things were different. For us Europeans, many of the milestones in this fine genre weren’t published when the games initially first came out, and we had to import so many games.

This report is going to give you a history lesson of how the situation with console RPGs was in Europe, what we had to do to play the games and when things finally changed.

So as always, enjoy and if you have anything you notice, feel free to contact us anytime.
