In the games

Lakshmi was first introduced in Final Fantasy VI in 1994 as an Esper, a special being that, upon summoned, granted some spells. In the case of Lakshmi, it was a healing spell. She was trapped in a painting with the demon Chardanook, and eventually freed by the party.

In subsequent Final Fantasy releases, Lakshmi always was a healing summon, or at least a summon with good intentions and helpful to the party.

In Final Fantasy XIV, Lakshmi was summoned by the Qalyana tribe of snake people, and as she had been summoned with ill intentions, the will of the people who summoned her affected her intentions - and so she had to be fought as a boss.

In the real world

The real Lakshmi (लक्ष्मी) is the hinduist goddess of beauty, luck, fertility and propsperity. She is the goddess of everything that thrives and is said to be the medium between humans and Vishnu. Generally, she is shown basically with only good intentions and powers.

She is a goddess who doesn't want to stay at the same place, and if one tried to keep her by force, she'll lose all the love for them.

Lakshmi is often presented as a human woman, together with her husband on the snake Anata (which is the corresponding antagonist tribe to the Qalyana tribe in Final Fantasy XIV).
