Ancient mesopotamian mythology

In the games

Gilgamesh is a recurring character who is both a foe and some-sort-of hero in the Final Fantasy series. He first appeared in Final Fantasy V, where he initially was a vassal to the games' antagonist, Exdeath. He battled the heroes of light multiple times (sometimes along with his friend Enkidu). After being betrayed by his master, he helped the team out and even tried to become their friend.

After Final Fantasy V, Gilgamesh appeared in many other Final Fantasy games and remakes. It is hinted by the games that it indeed always is the same Gilgamesh, who travels interdimensionally between the games' worlds.

He is presented as a very Japanese looking person, or rather demon, together with his green skinned friend Enkidu.

In the real world

The original Gilgamesh was a Sumerian king, said to rule in Uruk about 3000 years b.c. He was a mighty king who, according to legends, had undertaken many heroic actions, wich eventually to the creation of the Epic of Gilgamesh. However, it is not known if Gilgamesh himself was a real person at all.

Gilgamesh, two-thirds god and one-third human, was said to have gained eternal life by diving into the ocean on the easternmost island of the world and consuming the herbs of immortality. After his adventures with Enkidu, however, he had to realize that living forever is for the gods only and mortality is for the humans. Enkidu was a wild being living in the eternal steppe who had been brought to civilization by Gilgamesh.

The epos has been written on Sumerian stone tablets and today is stored in the British Museum of London.
