When the boss wants to end it all

Written in 2023

There are some bosses who have somewhat understandable reasoning. They tried to do something for the better, tried to save the world in their time or their perspective, but eventually they were let down by the people or even the loved ones they wanted to save.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Take Ys IX: Monstrum Nox for example. Atra Nox, the final boss (who is revealed very late in the game) has been artificially created to fight monsters in a twilight world (called Grimwald Nox) created by a god. This twilight world should harbour all the negative feelings of the people in the realm of Gllia, but things went out of control after a long year.

A group of warriors that are ever being cloned and reborn has to fight off all the monsters in the Grimwald Nox when it appears.

An alchemist called Zola tried to create the creature to fight the evil beings in the Grimwald Nox so that the suffering of the warriors has to end. However, the eventual conclusion of Atra Nox, his creation, is to kill all humans, so there won't be any negative feelings anymore to create monsters. In that scenario, no one has to fight anymore!

Tales of Vesperia

Tales of Vesperia has a more emotional aspect to the final boss wanting to end it all. Duke Pantarei was a powerful soldier who wanted to have humans and a species of other sentinent beings, so-called Entelexeia, living in peace.

He could help end a great war, but in the end, humans lost the trust in the Entelexeia and started hunting them down, killing Duke's partner Elucifer. This made him lose faith in humanity altogether.

When humans awaken an old evil being, Duke wants to trade all the human life in exchange for that threat being killed so that the world can exist in peace without humans.

This is a motivation out of disappointment and despair, but there could be other reasons as well.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers

Hades was part of the ruling class in an once unified world, and he tried his best to save all of his fellows when a big disaster threatened to kill everyone in Final Fantasy XIV. The result was, however, that the world was split into fourteen smaller worlds, with every soul and living being split up.

His ultimate goal is to reunite all the split worlds with the source world, but every time in the process, one of the worlds will be destroyed and every living being killed there.

So in summary, there can be three main reasons why the final boss wants to end it all:

  • a heartless analysis of the situation determines that it would be the best to kill all humans.
  • a person is so deeply disappointed in the human race that they jus want to kill everyone and let the world prosper without humans (or human-likes)
  • a person has a greater goal and does not care about any living being in order to achieve what they strive for

Back to the cliche selection.
